Thoughts on Tomorrow's Bowl

Northwestern vs. Texas A&M

Northwestern picks off a Cal pass during the 1948 Rose Bowl

Tomorrow is the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas in Houston. (What a mouthful.) We care because our Northwestern Wildcats (6-6) are facing the Texas A&M Aggies (6-6). If you're reading this, you are one of many devout Northwestern fans who can cite many statistics about the significance of tomorrow's game:
  • 2011 is NU's 5th straight bowl-eligible season (a school record)
  • Tomorrow is NU's 4th straight bowl (a school record)
  • NU last won a bowl since the 1948 Rose Bowl (63 years, if you don't have a calculator nearby)
  • NU has lost 8 consecutive bowls since that, our first, bowl game - a national record, I believe
  • The last three bowl games have been decided by a touchdown or less. Two went into overtime and are considered some of the best bowl games ever watched by the college football community
Either because of or in spite of the above facts, all of our bowls were packed with purple. At least 10,000 Wildcat fans will be in attendance tomorrow.

Please read the following NU blogs (just two of many that I try to keep up with) for their always fantastic coverage and more facts, trivia, and strategies:

Now on to my personal bowl-watching story:

I will be watching at the Blackfinn in DC - voted the best Northwestern game watch in the nation. I've been there many times and count many friends among the DC Club members. If you're in the area, please show up and root for the 'Cats.

Despite what their 6-6 record indicates, Texas A&M has a scary team. Tannehill, their quarterback, loves to throw. If he were in the Big Ten, he'd be no. 2 in passing yards. He has quite a set of wide receivers to toss to. All statistically are better than our boys. Texas A&M will be throwing... a lot.

Unfortunately, our secondary suffered a few significant injuries and we have some young players going against Tannehill and his WRs. Our secondary is what caused many of this year's Wildcat headaches in our six losses. I'm conditioning myself for a tough game to watch.

But we're talking about the Northwestern University Wildcats football team. For what we lack in size and experience, we have in skill, athleticism, and determination. We have No. 7, PersaStrong, himself. Did you know he put up numbers that were BETTER than last seasons's? That's after missing the first three games and being injured several times! WOW!

Our no. 2 is no. 2 - QB/WR Kain Colter. I half-expect Fitzgerald to put Colter in on the defensive side of the ball just to prove the kid can do it all. He orchestrated some stunning series, pulled off amazing escapes, and put a lot of points on the board. Expect to see him throwing, rushing, and receiving.

On the other side of the line is Brian Peters who picked off an opponent with a broken hand. Enough said.

These three players and all of the others on the sideline and on the field give me a lot of confidence. We don't have the stats that Texas A&M has. We have Northwestern intangibles. Our team has history to make. We are the underdogs and relish that role. The bigger the opponent, the bigger the fight we put up. We're one of the nation's best road teams. That matters because we're playing only a couple of hours away from Texas A&M in front of a loud, raucous crowd of Texans. I expect to see all of our players smiling at the noise, knowing they can pull off the upset and get a W we've wanted for 62 years.

Up until a few days ago, I was feeling down about this game. Every stat and injury report I saw put knots in my stomach.

A few days ago, I remembered that this is more than numbers. Just like your 401(k) fine print says: statistics are only from historic data and not a guarantee of future outcomes. The Northwestern players and coaches (and devoted fans) have always made our intangibles a 12th man.

I'm expecting a game for the history books tomorrow. A game that will make me yell at the TV, stand up in ecstasy, and collapse back to my seat in dismay. But I've been through all of that before and believe that, at the end of the game, we will have our first bowl win since 1948.

I look forward to being surrounded by my Wildcat family tomorrow and for more happy memories, win or lose.

Happy New Year and Go U Northwestern!

11/19 Minnesota @ NU: Charlottesville Game Watch

A Cardiac Opponent at a Critical Time

12:00 p.m. kickoff
Wild Wing Cafe
Charlottesville Amtrak Station
(click for directions)

The Wildcats are 5-5 and need to win one of the next two games to become bowl eligible for our record 5th year in a row. This game is critical to our roller coaster season.

The Golden Gophers of the University of Minnesota (2-8) are visiting this weekend and you can expect another cardiac classic. In the last twelve meetings with UMinn, seven of the games have been decided by a touchdown or less. (Fortunately, we're 6-1 in those games. Unfortunately, we're 1-4 in the others...) But past records don't matter on Saturday. Just ask any Minnesota fan - they were one of the most dominant teams in football for generations. Or ask any NU fan about our team pre-1995. Hopefully, we'll be relaxed in our seats by the 4th Quarter and this game will be a comfortable W for the 'Cats.

Come out and join the Northwestern crowd of Charlottesville. Wear purple.

Go U!

NU @ Indiana - 10/29 @ noon - Let's break our streak

Hey Virginia Wildcats,

NU (2-5, 0-4) travels to Bloomington, Indiana tomorrow for a cross-division matchup against the Hoosiers (1-7, 0-4). It's not a battle of ranked rivals, but this is a do-or-die game for the 'Cats. Check out the following reviews on LakeThePosts.com, Northwestern's premier football blog.

PRR: For as poorly as Northwestern has played, the team still has not faced a Big Ten game it was favored in (not that that is historically a good thing). Indiana is the first game the Wildcats go into as the favorite and actually come away with the win. Part of me wants to believe that Northwestern’s porous record is a product of the law of averages as Pat Fitzgerald’s luck in close games finally ran out and we are paying for close wins the last few years. Also, a defense that cannot defend the pass or get pressure on the quarterback, but those are tangible reasons that my delusional mind will not accept. This team can put up a lot of points, and Indiana cannot. Hopefully the Wildcats can have the confidence to take this game and begin righting the ship.

Northwestern 35, Indiana 21

LTP: As I mentioned, you have to go back to 2001 to find a game between the Hoosiers and ‘Cats that is a non-OT game where the difference was more than 4 points. It is crazy how close these games are and NU simply does not know how to put teams away as a program, let alone the confidence of this team. Dan Persa is injured and it will further limit his mobility, but the Indiana “D” is in the same ballpark as bad as NU. Problem is Indiana’s offense is highly underrated as, like NU, they move the ball well, but seem to have problems putting six on the board. Tre Roberson accumulated 300 total yards of offense last week vs the Hawkeyes in a game that was much more competitive than the final score indicates. This will, yawn, come down to the final play on the final drive.

NU 37 Indiana 34

Despite the records, history shows this will be an exciting game.

Though there's no official NUVA game watch this week, you can expect to find fellow Northwestern fans at Wild Wing Café in Charlottesville.

Also, don't forget to sign up for next week's Shakespeare in Staunton!!

10/8 UMich @ NU: Hampton Roads Game Watch

On Stage and In the Spotlight

7:00 p.m. kickoff

Greene Turtle Sports Bar

Greenbriar Mall

Chesapeake (click for directions)

After nearly upsetting the #24 Fighting Illini, our men head home to a sell-out crowd. The Wildcats play the #12 University of Michigan (5-0, 1-0) under the lights of Ryan Field. This is the first game against a Legends Division foe (remember: M's, N's, and Iowa) and a matchup between two record-breaking quarterbacks.

Last week, Dan Persa returned to his starring role and put on a good show. Jeremy Ebert and our critically-acclaimed wide receiving corps are ready to give the performance of their careers on stage in Evanston.

Join fellow Wildcats for a very special Hampton Roads game watch. The Wolverines of the University of Michigan Club of Tidewater have invited us into their lair! Wear purple. Lots of it.

Go U!

P.S. NU blogger LakeThePosts is calling this our Super Bowl. It's that big of a deal.
P.P.S. ESPN's Pat Forde called this game one of three that will "alter the fan experience" in this week's Forde Yard Dash column. (Our prime-time game is on the marquee with two huge rivalries.)

Gamewatch Report

A group of enthusiastic fans (including 2 NUMBALUMS, so could how they not be?) gathered at the Wild Wing Café in Charlottesville this afternoon to watch the Wildcats battle the Illini for the Land of Lincoln Trophy. Although the game didn't turn out the way we wanted (we lost 38-35, surrendering a touchdown in the final seconds of the game), we wore the purple in the heart of University of Virginia land.

Join us for future Gamewatches, including locations in other cities TBA. The next three games are night games, with 7:00pm ET kickoffs. We're also hoping to start Gamewatches in other cities in the Commonwealth, so check back with us for details.

A Downstate Statement Game

                               12:00 p.m. kickoff
Wild Wing Café (click for directions)
                      Charlottesville Amtrak Station

This year's Land of Lincoln Trophy means more than ever for Northwestern. Two weeks ago, about to sneak into the Top 25, the Wildcats were upset by a rushing Army. They now head to Champaign to face #24 Illinois, 4-0 for the first time since the '50s. The Fighting Illini embarrassed us at Wrigley last year, our first game after Dan Persa's season-ending injury. But we love being the underdogs. We want respect and revenge this Saturday. We have HurriKain Colter, Jeremy Ebert, and... finally... #7 himself. This is rivalry has reached the next level.

The game watch may be in Charlottesville, but it's the wrong time to wear orange. Wear your purple with pride.
